December TBR 2019

tbr Thursday

It only occurred to me this morning as I write this that I haven’t actually decided on a TBR for this month. I’ve just kind of been picking each book as I finish the one before. Looking at last months TBR I got through about half it but read two other books that weren’t on the list at all so I think four was an accurate estimate for a quiet reading month. I’m going to try and stick with four again this month as obviously it’s Christmas but I have a few things going on this month (mostly Dungeons and Dragons related, I’m not gonna lie) that will mean I might not be able to read as much as I would like (always the case tbh). I’m just going to wing this TBR so let’s see…

Starsight by Brendon Sanderson
I adored Skyward last year and its sequel has been one of my long-awaited releases for the end of this year. This will quite likely be my next read and I’m so grateful to have received a gifted copy from Gollancz on its release. I’m so very ready to follow Spensa and M-bot (not forgetting doomslug) into the stars!

The Guinevere Deception by Kiersten White
I had been hearing about this for a while, I own Slayer by the same author which my husband immensely enjoyed reading but I haven’t got around to yet and as someone who loves Arthurian lore I was tempted more and more every time I heard something about this new release. It was when author Kiersten posted “SO MUCH LONGING IT COULD BE A CW SHOW MAIN COUPLE BROKEN UP AT THE END OF SEASON ONE” on Twitter that I immediately brought it. I love me some longing and angst and this description just gave me Kara and Mon-El from Supergirl vibes after stuff goes down there and I need more of that drug and I’m hoping The Guinevere Deception will deliver.

The God Game by Danny Tobey
I am SO hyped for this January release! I was lucky enough to have been picked to receive one of the few ARC copies of this from Gollancz. We have a virtual world ran by underground hackers, an omnipotent A.I that refers to itself as GOD and starts demanding its users complete more and more worrying and cruel missions with threats against them if they do not complete them. This book sounds so very up my street and with CTRL+S still very fresh in my mind I’m excited to get around to this book.

Somebody Give This Heart A Pen by Sophia Thakur
The Goodreads synopsis describes this much better than I ever could:
“From acclaimed performance poet, Sophia Thakur comes a powerful new collection of poems exploring issues of identity, difference, perseverance, relationships, fear, loss and joy. The collection is arranged as life is: from youth to school, to home life, falling in love and falling straight back out again. The poems draw on the author’s experience as a young mixed-race young woman trying to make sense of a lonely and complicated world. With a strong narrative voice and emotional empathy, this is poetry that will resonate with all young people, whatever their background, and whatever their dreams.”
I haven’t read a lot of poetry recently and it’s just something I tend to dip my toe into now and again but something about this book just called to me and I’m looking forward to reading this one too!

The Sky Weaver by Kristen Ciccarelli
I really loved The Last Namsara, which I finally got around to reading last year just before the release of The Caged Queen. I enjoyed both of them but The Last Namsara especially. I’m really looking forward to this third book in the Iskari series! I only have my kindle version of this at the moment which I preordered but I will probably need to get my hands on a physical copy to match my others asap.

I think five books is probably ambitious enough for me this month! Especially as Starsight is quite a big chunky book. Have you read any of the books on my TBR? What are you hoping to read this month? Do we have any the same?

For a change, it actually feels like it’s been longer than a fortnight since I last did one of these! I think because I actually got some books finished for a change. I’m definitely feeling more confident reading-wise and on a whole which is a nice change after feeling quite overwhelmed over the past month or so.

What are you currently reading?

Sherlock Holmes and The Christmas Demon by James Lovegrove is my current read. As soon as I realised it was penned by James I knew I needed it after he wrote an AMAZING Firefly novel earlier this year (review here) and I had decided then that I needed to read some of his Sherlock Holmes work and this seemed the perfect opportunity, not to mention that the cover for this book is the most beautiful thing in existence. Not to mention it’s actually a really good read so far!

What did you recently finish reading?

A few days ago I finished Star Wars: Resistance Reborn by Rebecca Roanhorse and although it didn’t quite grab me the way Phasma did (I’m seriously never getting over that book) it was really good, I enjoyed seeing what happens during some of the time between The Last Jedi and Rise of Skywalker as well as seeing some older faces that have been in the books, the comics and the older films.

What do you think you’ll read next?

Ahh, I won’t go into too much detail as my December TBR is going live tomorrow but I think it’ll probably be Starsight by Brendon Sanderson. I am trying to work my way through my ARCS and advance copies but trying to keep a balance between books that are coming out next year and new ones that are out now so that I can get some content written in advance but without running out of my weekly reviews too.

Have you read any of these? What are you reading right now? What have you read recently? I want to hear all about your reading life right now!

Considering I’m still on target with NaNoWriMo I’m quite pleased I’ve actually managed to get a fair bit of reading in this past fortnight! It’s certainly been helped that I’ve been reading some brilliant books I’m sure!

What are you currently reading?

My copy of Queen of Nothing by Holly Black arrived a few days early but I’m proud to say I managed to finish the book I have been currently reading at the time and managed to wait until my friend got their copy so we can buddy read before starting it but I’m reading it now and OMG. I didn’t realise how much I missed this series of books! I somehow forgot just how much I adore Jude and realised that she may actually be one of my all-time favourite characters. I also forgot just how much I loved the court intrigues and the push for power etc as well as the (I’m well aware) messed up relationship between Jude and Cardan. This whole book (so far) has felt like returning home and reading something written just for me.

What did you recently finish reading?

I recently finished CTRL – S by Andy Briggs and although I wasn’t sure what to expect and didn’t think it had the greatest start for me personally I found it wholly addictive and picked it up to read every moment I could (review coming very soon). The day I finished CTRL – S my Kickstarter copy of NPC Tea: Issue Seven by Sarah Milman came in and I feverishly devoured that in one sitting, it went so fast! Too fast! So much was explained and so much happened and I was distraught when I read the end and realised the next issue would be the last! It was left on a massive cliffhanger and I fear the wait for the next issue in February might kill me, I’m hoping all the Star Wars goodness to come in the next couple of months will help keep me distracted.

What do you think you’ll read next?

My first instinct was to say Star Wars: Resistance Reborn by Rebecca Roanhorse and I do really want to read this next but I’ve got time as The Rise of Skywalker isn’t out until mid-December so I figured it would actually probably be best to read  The Sky Weaver by Kristen Ciccarelli first instead. I loved the first two Iskari books and I don’t want to risk ruining it while trying to read it while being full-on into my yearly Star Was hype fest/obsession.

I’m so blessed to have been able to read and get hold of SO many great books that are all coming out right now and I’m so excited to read them all! What are you excited to read right now? Are there any new releases you’re excited to get your hands on or already have?

It’s been a fortnight already which is crazy, I felt like my last one of these posts was only a few days ago! It must be NaNoWriMo brain (check out my latest NaNo post here to see how I’m getting on). Still, I’m here and I’ve at least done SOME reading in between frantically writing so here’s my fortnightly check-in! Its scarily very similar to last fortnights check-in  but shhh.

If you want to join in with WWW don’t forget to send over a big thank you to Sam at Taking on a World of Words for keeping WWW alive and kicking.

I’m working my way through Chasing the Shadows by Maria V. Snyder again at the moment! Still so grateful to have been given the chance to read this early and I’m really enjoying it so far!! It’s been really hard to put down. I know I was reading this for my last post a fortnight ago but I had some problems with my phone (where I’ve been reading it) charging really slowly so opted to read a paperback until I could get it fixed. Good news is the problem is sorted and I’m flying through this now!

What did you recently finish reading?

Unexpectedly, I ended up reading A Court of Frost and Starlight by Sarah J Maas which hadn’t been planned at all but after watching the latest teaser trailer from the lovely folks at The Starfall Court (check it out here) I was desperate to delve into that world again and this short novella of sorts was absolutely perfect and just what I needed. You can check out my review that went live on Tuesday here.

What do you think you’ll read next?

With any luck this time I’ll actually read CTRL S by Andy Briggs next. It arrived a little later than I thought it would so I wasn’t able to start it but it’s absolutely next on my list although my review might not be up for a little while yet as I’m taking part in a blog tour a little later on so keep your eyes peeled!

If you’re interested in what else I plan to read this month then never fear as tomorrow is the first Thursday of the month and therefore time for my monthly TBR Thursday post which is looking a little thin for a change but hopefully all the more manageable for it!

I’m finally starting to make my way through Angel Mage by Garth Nix and really enjoying it already. I’m not a huge amount of the way through but the group is pretty much all accounted for now and things are starting to come together. The world is really interesting and I can’t wait to read more.

What did you recently finish reading?

I’ve just finished the gorgeous Finding Home Graphic Novels by Hari Conner, I adore Janek and Chepi. I’d been meaning to read them for ages and they’ve been a nice break, I started reading a few pages or so of Vol. 1 each evening and then I ended up reading most of Vol. 2 in one sitting. I’ll go into more detail in a couple of weeks when my review of them both go live.

What do you think you’ll read next?

Definitely Hex Life: Wicked new tales of witchery edited by Christoper Golden and Rachel Autumn Deering. October is here and I’m feeling spooky and this book is an absolutely perfect read on the run-up to Halloween for sure. Not to mention I kind of want to get in the witchy spirit ready for the second book Discovery of Witches book I’m planning to get back to in audio format this month too.

What have you been reading this past fortnight? Have you read any of these already? If so what did you think? What are you planning to read next?

October TBR 2019

tbr Thursday
It is somehow October already and although I’m wondering where on earth the time went I’m also SO READY for Autumn. Give me cardigans and hot chocolate and darker nights, chilly air and crispy leaves. I love Autumn so on that note I am glad to see October, it just arrived sooner than I had expected. I had an absolutely terrible reading month in September and only actually got two books read all month after Darkdawn took me so long. BUT I think I’m back in the swing of things (hopefully) and this month my TBR will look a little familiar as it will include a lot of the books from last month with one extra which I am super grateful to be on the blog tour for at the end of October!

Angel Mage by Garth Nix
I loved reading Sabriel when I was younger and something described as The Three Muskateers x Joan of Arc with MAGIC. Yes please, thank you, I’ll be over here reading. This is the blog tour I’m on this month (despite me telling myself I wouldn’t be accepting any more reviews or blog tours last month – I just couldn’t pass up this opportunity). I’ve already read a small bit and have already enjoyed what I’ve seen so far so fingers crossed the rest of the book is just as good!

Hex Life Anthology by Kelly Armstrong, Rachel Caine and many more
After just writing up my review for a different anthology I’m super excited to finally FINALLY get around to reading this collection of witchy stories at last.

Imaginary Friend by Stephen Chbosky
The new novel by the author of The Perks of Being a Wallflower promises to be different, unnerving and spooky from what I’ve read of the sample I’ve already read,

The Boneships by RJ Barker
I had really hoped to read this last month and would have been what I read after Darkdawn but my copy seems to have got lost in the post somewhere *cries* I have thankfully managed to get a copy via NetGalley which I’m still looking forward to reading, just a little later than I expected.

NPC Tea: Issue Seven by Sarah Milman
I AM NOT READY. Issue seven is the penultimate issue and I’m excited, scared and sad. I love all of the characters and I’m not ready for it to end! That being said, some things went down in issue six that need to be addressed and ahhhhh I just can’t. I backed the issue on Kickstarter and I think they’ll probably be sent out soon!

I feel like having all of these books on my list might be a little overconfident as a good few of them are pretty chunky books. It’s also Intokber month and I’m planning to take part in the writer’s version as well as prepping for NaNoWriMo next month and you know, raising a four-year-old, running a house (haha), etc.  Either way, wish me luck and may your TBR be ever fruitful but not so much that it falls over and crushes you to your death!

WWW Wednesday – September 25th 2019

www wednesday

My reading has been stagnant for a few weeks now while I’ve been reading Darkdawn but I’ve finally finished it now and so I can move on! I was excited to get a lot more reading done but it turns out I’ve got a horrid cold my husband brought home last week and so I’ve just been moping around feeling sorry for myself while occasionally playing animal crossing to cheer me up in between looking after Nate who has also caught it! I’m still making progress though and so I invite you to check out my fortnightly WWW Wednesday post and hear about what I’ve been reading and what I plan to read next.

If you want to join in with WWW don’t forget to send over a big thank you to Sam at Taking on a World of Words for keeping WWW alive and kicking.

What are you currently reading?

I’m currently reading The Deathless Girls by Kiran Milgrave Harwood. I’m only about 20% of the way through at the moment and I’ve enjoyed the writing style but nothing hugely interesting has happened yet although there have been little hints here and there of what’s to come possibly. In case you haven’t heard of The Deathless Girls before it’s a tagged as a feminist retelling of the story of the Bridges of Dracula.

What did you recently finish reading?

Obviously Darkdawn but since then I’ve also finished NPC Tea – Vol Six by Sarah Milman (Issues one – six available here). “NPC Tea is about Cardiff’s least popular tea shop, Y Ddraig, run by a perfectionist elf and a disgruntled fire summon. When a magicless human discovers Y Ddraig’s secret and a type of banned magic rears its ugly head, caddies upon caddies of rotting tea become the least of their worries as the entire city of Cardiff is threatened with destruction!” I think volume six may have been my absolute favourite issue so far! There were some lovely sweet moments, much blushing and a nice healthy dose of danger too! Things are really hotting up with the penultimate issue seven out imminently, ahh I don’t want it to end!

What do you think you’ll read next?

Unless NPC Volume seven turns up before I finish The Deathless Girls then it’ll almost certainly be Angel Mage by Garth Nix. I’m really excited to read this new dive into adult fantasy AND it’s a standalone novel which I’m so here for right now. I’ve seen some describe the book as a cross of The Three Muskateers and Joan of Arc which sounds very much up my streets (I was obsessed with The Man in the Iron Mask and The Messenger: Joan of Arc when I was a teenager) so I can’t wait to get stuck in, plus I’m taking part in the blog tour towards the end of the month!

Have you read any of the books featured today? What are you reading at the moment? What have you read recently? Let me know and I’ll reply from my sickbed as much as I can. Keep an eye out for a new book tag coming tomorrow!
