October TBR 2019

tbr Thursday
It is somehow October already and although I’m wondering where on earth the time went I’m also SO READY for Autumn. Give me cardigans and hot chocolate and darker nights, chilly air and crispy leaves. I love Autumn so on that note I am glad to see October, it just arrived sooner than I had expected. I had an absolutely terrible reading month in September and only actually got two books read all month after Darkdawn took me so long. BUT I think I’m back in the swing of things (hopefully) and this month my TBR will look a little familiar as it will include a lot of the books from last month with one extra which I am super grateful to be on the blog tour for at the end of October!

Angel Mage by Garth Nix
I loved reading Sabriel when I was younger and something described as The Three Muskateers x Joan of Arc with MAGIC. Yes please, thank you, I’ll be over here reading. This is the blog tour I’m on this month (despite me telling myself I wouldn’t be accepting any more reviews or blog tours last month – I just couldn’t pass up this opportunity). I’ve already read a small bit and have already enjoyed what I’ve seen so far so fingers crossed the rest of the book is just as good!

Hex Life Anthology by Kelly Armstrong, Rachel Caine and many more
After just writing up my review for a different anthology I’m super excited to finally FINALLY get around to reading this collection of witchy stories at last.

Imaginary Friend by Stephen Chbosky
The new novel by the author of The Perks of Being a Wallflower promises to be different, unnerving and spooky from what I’ve read of the sample I’ve already read,

The Boneships by RJ Barker
I had really hoped to read this last month and would have been what I read after Darkdawn but my copy seems to have got lost in the post somewhere *cries* I have thankfully managed to get a copy via NetGalley which I’m still looking forward to reading, just a little later than I expected.

NPC Tea: Issue Seven by Sarah Milman
I AM NOT READY. Issue seven is the penultimate issue and I’m excited, scared and sad. I love all of the characters and I’m not ready for it to end! That being said, some things went down in issue six that need to be addressed and ahhhhh I just can’t. I backed the issue on Kickstarter and I think they’ll probably be sent out soon!

I feel like having all of these books on my list might be a little overconfident as a good few of them are pretty chunky books. It’s also Intokber month and I’m planning to take part in the writer’s version as well as prepping for NaNoWriMo next month and you know, raising a four-year-old, running a house (haha), etc.  Either way, wish me luck and may your TBR be ever fruitful but not so much that it falls over and crushes you to your death!

WWW Wednesday 14th August

www wednesday

It’s been a slow reading couple of weeks for me! With little man off school and then being ill the past few days I’ve not been able to get very much reading done at all but I did finally tick an eagerly anticipated book off my TBR though!

If you want to join in with WWW don’t forget to send over a big thank you to Sam at Taking on a World of Words for keeping WWW alive and kicking.

What are you currently reading?

Godsgrave by Jay Kristoff

I’m really gutted I haven’t been able to read much of this at the moment but I’m already really enjoying what I’ve read so far and can’t wait to finally get back into it now I’m feeling a lot better. Will admit I’m a little scared of having to wait for Darkdawn after finishing this though.

What did you recently finish reading?

Nevernight by Jay Kristoff

You’re probably seeing a pattern here right? I’m SO glad I finally got around to reading this book because, as expected, I absolutely freaking adore it. Nevernight is basically the story of Mia joining Murder Hogwarts and I love me some boarding school stories AND assassins, this is honestly the perfect book for me. Also, it may have broken me for a day or two as well. I made a YouTube video about it. (warnings for a sprinkling of bad language and spoilers after being warned in advance).

What do you think you’ll read next?

Finding Home: Volume Two by Harri Conner, What Magic is This? by Holly Bourne

Assuming I manage to finish Godsgrave before Darkdawn releases I plan to have a binge read of some graphic novels I have on my TBR at the moment and I received a finished copy of What Magic is This? From the lovely folks at Barrington Stoke this weekend and I think because it’s a nice short read I should be able to fit it in no problem.

What are you reading at the moment? Have you read something recently that you’ve absolutely loved? Tell me all about it!

TBR Thursday – February

After what feels like the longest January possible we have finally reached the first Thursday of February and that means it’s time for my monthly TBR (to be read) post! I was hoping to have a Sci-Fi filled February but alas I had forgotten that King of Scars was coming out and that I still hadn’t read some of the other books that are advised to be read beforehand, also my most anticipated contemporary for the year has just arrived ready for me to read in time for the blog tour let alone all of the other stuff happening. I will absolutely be reading a sci-fi book by the end of the month though, you’ll have to read on to find out which one!

A Queen of Air and Darkness by Cassandra Clare
I’ve been trying to get this finished since it came out and I’M STILL reading it. Well listening to it, I have just under seven hours to go. So close yet so far. It’s not that it’s bad it’s just SO long.

Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo
As mentioned above King of Scars is out now and I’ve read the Grisha Trilogy but I still hadn’t managed to get around to Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom! I’m rectifying that this month by finally reading these. I’ve even got the auido book for Six of Crows and enjoying listening to that to avoid listening to AQOAAD, not gonna lie.

Summer Bird Blue by Akemi Dawn Bowman
I was lucky enough to recieve an early finished copy of this book from Ink Road books and I can’t wait to get stuck into it, I’m not a big contemporary reader but after reading Akemi’s first book, Starfish, she’s became an insta buy author for me.

King of Scars by Leigh Bardugo
I enjoyed most of the Grisha books I’ve read so far (we don’t talk about soggy bread Mal) and I’m excited to read more in the same universe, I figured it would make the most sense to read this after finishing Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom. Also the sooner I read it the less likely I am to end up seeing spoilers I hope.

Once and Future by Amy Rose Capetta and Cori McCarthy
A female pansexual King Arthur. YES PLEASE. Those who know me will no doubt be aware of the fact I love kick ass girls with swords (I mean most weapons are fine but swords or daggers BIG yes) and to top it off she’s queer and Merlin is a gay teenager. This honestly sounds like the best thing and I genuinely can’t wait to get into it. It looks like I’m probably not going to get an ARC of Aurora Rising so I’m instead going to use Once and Future to kick start my incoming sci-fi binge.

S4S – Books that have sat on your TBR forever

This should be a fairly easy prompt for me this week (I always say that and end up regretting it when I have more trouble than I thought I would!) But I have a huge TBR and because I’m a mood reader I tend to find it hard to keep any kind of actual schedule when it comes to reading so a lot of books just get pushed aside to wait until I’m done reading what I’m more in the mood for at the time and sometimes they just get a little forgotten. Being a little tight on money this past month and for the forseeable future at the moment means I’m on a book buying ban and am finally working through my TBR and enjoying finally getting to some books I’ve really been excited about! Silver lining and all that.

1. Outside in by Maria V. Snyder
When checking my TBR on goodreads this was actually the first book I added. The first book Inside out was really enjoyable and was one of the best plot twists/shocks I’d read at the time and I couldn’t wait for the next one. A lot of other stuff happened between the release of the first book and then its sequel and I hadn’t realised it was out for a long time and then I got a hold of it eventually and promised I’d get to it but haven’t got there yet and is currently the only book by Maria I’ve not yet read!

2. Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice
If you read last weeks  S4S you will know I decide to take my time in reading this and that means it’s been put on the back burner quite a lot. I also admit that books in my TBR that I’ve already seen the films more also tend to get dropped back quite a bit as it tends to make me less excited to read them because I feel like I already know roughly what happens. (I know this isn’t always the case and the book has much more in it but that is how my brain works apparently).

3. Cinder by Marissa Meyer
Cinder is often one of the books I look at and consider reading quite often but never get around to because there are more than a few books in the series and if they’re already out I want to read them one after the other where possible so it often gets overlooked because of that which is a shame because it seems totally up my street.

4. The Sin Eaters Daughter by Melinda Sailsbury
So Melinda Sailsbury is one of a couple of authors I love without having read anything by. This sounds stupid I know but there are a few authors I’ve met who or heard speak on panels etc and follow on Twitter and I just love their aesthetic and hearing about their books etc. I usually then buy said books and again if I’m not quite in the right mood I don’t get around to them right away. I’ve had this problem with V.W Schwab as well and I tried reading a Darker Shade of Magic, Vicious and then The Sin Eaters Daughter during my biggest book hangover and I’ve not managed to get back around to them yet but soon!! They’re all very very high on my current TBR so fingers crossed!!

5. Nevernight by Jay Kristoff
I’m always on about how I still haven’t gotten around to this one and how it seems like the perfect book for me and I’ve nearly picked it up a couple of times this month already so I feel like the time to finally get around to reading this is almost upon us! With this book I think one of the problems is that I and others have hyped it up quite a bit and although I imagine it’s probably well worth the hype I think a part of me is worried that after all this time and being excited to read it what if I don’t like it?

6.Undead and Unsure by Mary Janice Davidson
So this is like…book 12 in the series and it was a series of books I absolutely adored but books 8 and 9 were starting to take the story in kind of weird directions I thought at the time and I really didn’t enjoy book 10 and stopped reading them. There have been 6 more books since then and I’ve always kept book 12 (Undead and Unsure) on my TBR because I feel like I’ll get forgive it and get back to it one day (and surely it can’t end as bad as the Sookie Stackhouse books right? ….right?) As one of the series of books that really got me back into reading after some time away I feel like I owe it to the series to give it another try. Just not quite yet…

TBR Thursday

It might just be me but even when I’m reading a book that’s really great I’m almost always thinking about what I want to read next. In some cases it’s a book I already own but quite often it’s a book I don’t own so it also addresses my need to always buy more books. I figured ibe Thursday a month I would go through some of the books I’ve decided I want to read next and my reasons for picking them, in turn hopefully helping me decide what I actually want to read next and what is just a passing fancy. Let’s roll out this week’s contenders!

1. Illuminae by  Amie Kaufman and  Jay Kristoff
I have picked up this book and thought about buying it SO many times I’ve honestly lost count and now that Obsido is coming out I’m feeling the itch to try out this book! I had originally been put off by all the strange pages of blacked out text and other things but the more I see it the more that is starting to feel like a selling point to me. This is very high on the want to buy list and is so far one of the most likely. I’m honestly resisting the urge to just order it right now.

2. Vicious by V.E. Schwab
Ever since I started becoming super interested in Victoria’s tweets about Vengeful and looked further into it realising the book she was currently writing would be a follow up to Vicious, a book about a pair of villains I knew I needed in. I’ve been tempted a few times but it’s never quite felt like the right time but I’ve been on such a Star Wars kick the past month or so that I feel this could help bring me out of it.

3. State of Sorrow by
This one I actually own! Melinda is another author I love and ever since I’d read the sampler I’ve been excited to read this book! It’s literally on my shelf staring at me but I can’t help thinking of buying a new book! This is the book I should read next.

4. The Unmumsy Diaries by Sarah Turner/The Unmumsy Mum
Another strong contender as this is a book I already own. I loved the first one and my little one is not feeling so little anymore and I feel like I could do with some “not all parents are perfect” right now before I pull my remaining hair out. I can always count on Sarah to make me laugh when I want to cry as I slowly drown in a pile of clothes that need washing and food shopping that needs doing while my preschooler tries to drag me to the food cupboard for a snack. This one is looking like a really good choice right now too.

5. Big Bones
by  Laura Dockrill
My rating on Netgalley is starting to look horrendous because I requested a load thinking I wouldn’t get approved for many but instead got approved for all of them. I started reading Big Bones but put it on hold for some Star Wars books and mostly because I’ve been having trouble reading it, the writing itself is okay but I hate the main character with a passion and just reading from her point of view makes me angry so I decided to take a break from it. Looking at other reviews it’s scored fairly okay but I’m honestly not sure if I can finish it. I feel like I either need to give this one more go or just move on and start making my way through my other Netgalley titles.

I’m still only about half way through The Last Jedi Novelisation at the moment and six hours off from listening to Rouge One: Catalyst at the moment so it’ll be at least a good few days until I make it to any of these but I will be in the vicinity of a bookstore on Sunday so that may sway my decision. I think a big factor will be when I finish my current read, if it’s before Sunday I think I might have one more go at Big Bones and if I don’t get on with it dive straight into State of Sorrow or The Unmumsy Mum diaries depending how caught up on the housework I am. If it’s Sunday morning or even Saturday night though I think Illuminae is a very strong contender. We shall have to wait and see. This TBR thing is harder than I thought.

TBR TAG – Booktube

28117424_10155040868531581_751126403_n.jpgAt the beginning of the year I decided I had way too many books to read still, seriously my TBR is HUGE, so big in fact it takes up three shelves and most the top of a dresser. Upon realising just how many books I still had to read and what great books had gotten lost in the dreaded stacks upon stacks that just kept growing I made the decision that this would be the year that I finally read them. Well, as many as I can manage. I still have ARC’s to read on top of this along with a few books coming out this year that I absolutely cannot miss (I know excuses, excuses!).  Excuses or not I figured that this TBR tag would help remind me of some of the great books I still had sitting on my shelves (mostly) waiting to be read.
