Monthly Wrap up, spoiler free

Monthly Wrap Up – March 2020

Monthly Wrap up

It’s been a heck of a month hasn’t it? I’ve been in self-isolation for fourteen days (I’m free today!) and the country, along with a large portion of the world has gone into lockdown. Times are scary right now and although things been hard we can’t stop enjoying the things we love as long as we do so safely. So here is my monthly wrap up (a little later than usual but here all the same.

Currently Reading.

Deck of Omens by Christine Lynn Herman.
I have been SO excited for this, I really loved The Devouring Gray and I’ve been desperate to read the sequel since before the first book came out so the moment this was delivered I literally opened the package, sat down and started reading. I’m not getting through it as quick as I would like but that has more to do with me finding the time between keeping everything together at home and the amount of time I’ve been playing Animal Crossing for…we’ll come back to that.

Books I’ve read.

Star Wars: Age of Resistance – Villains. My comic book read for the month was quite an enjoyable one and pretty interesting getting a closer look at some of the characters.

Cursed: An anthology of dark fairy tales. I found this book a very mixed bag and this does happen quite often with anthologies I find, that some stories are great whereas some you can’t finish or barely get through and Cursed was very much like that which is why I make sure to review each story individually with a few lines and try to work out an average rating for the book itself. Henry and the Snake Wood Box was my favourite.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker novelisation. I finished this last week and had planned for the review to go up on Tuesday and then the Wednesday but although I did really enjoy it I just found myself unable to write much last week and couldn’t get the words down. I’ve had much better luck this week and said the review will be out pretty soon.

Changes from TBR

I did pretty well with this I think considering. I read two of the four books I had on my March TBR which is honestly better than I do a lot of the time because I’m such a fickle mood reader! I was lucky to get a copy of The Rise of Skywalker Novelisation early which helped as I didn’t have to choose between reading that or playing Animal Crossing for very long!

Books I’ve brought/received.

Chain of Gold by Cassandra Clare – Decided to order this the day before it came out after deciding I wouldn’t buy it for months beforehand. I caved when I realised there were special first editions.
The Deck of Omens by Christine Lynn Herman – GIFTED from Titan books.
Bookish and the Beast by Ashley Poston – GIFTED from Quirk Books
RWBY Official Manga: Vol 1 – Red Like Roses – Spotted this in Waterstones after having gone in for something else and couldn’t help myself.
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker expanded edition by Rae Carson – Again, went into Waterstones for one thing and came out with this.
Emily Eternal by M.G Wheaton – I managed to acquire one of the very pretty arc editions of this from a friend on Twitter.
Dragon Age; Tevinter Nights Anthology – GIFTED from Titan Books
Star Wars: The Queens Shadow by E.K. Johnston – Treated myself to this when I had to go into self-isolation.

Shows I’ve seen.

Picard. I would like to rewind time and watch the entire series again, please? I wasn’t sure how I would feel about this show but now that we’ve seen the whole thing (well, the first series at least) I can say for certain that I loved it. I wasn’t sure it could live up to Discovery for me, which I adored but honestly, it’s just as good just in a different way.

Duck Tales. This is not one I expected to be writing about and not one I’ve seen the whole of as I wasn’t particularly interested, it was more something we put on for my little one to watch, then Chris started watching too as he loved the old series, then I started watching it too and it was actually really good.

Tangled the series. I had been meaning to watch this for ages and with the launch of Disney Plus I have now finally started it and I’m already absolutely loving it. Cassandra is life.

Films I’ve seen.

Nothing new this month I don’t think but I did watch Ice Princess and both Princess Diaries films in one afternoon/evening with Chris about a week into our self-isolation.

Games I’ve played.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons. I think it was fairly obvious that this section would probably only consist of one game (although I did play a bit of Stardew Valley at the beginning of the month) and honestly, this game has been the main reason I’ve stayed anything close to sane this past week. Doing my own thing and spending evenings with my friends in-game has been amazing and so incredibly fun. We’ve had themed evenings, games, evenings just wishing on shooting stars and chatting. It reminds me of the month when Pokemon Go first came out years ago and everyone was out together every evening just catching Pokemon and yeah it’s been unreal.

Anything else?

A lot of great games of Dungeons and Dragons have occurred this month, even my more laid back games have had some incredibly tense moments and there are a lot of feels which I am obviously living for. I actually started recording our Monday games and episode two just went live on YouTube a couple of days ago if that’s something you’re interested in you can find the video below! (Warning there is some bad language).

For now though, happy April 1st, with any luck my tiny April TBR will be up tomorrow and then everything will be back to normal next week. Take care and stay safe.

For a change, it actually feels like it’s been longer than a fortnight since I last did one of these! I think because I actually got some books finished for a change. I’m definitely feeling more confident reading-wise and on a whole which is a nice change after feeling quite overwhelmed over the past month or so.

If you want to join in with WWW don’t forget to send over a big thank you to Sam at Taking on a World of Words for keeping WWW alive and kicking.

What are you currently reading?

Sherlock Holmes and The Christmas Demon by James Lovegrove is my current read. As soon as I realised it was penned by James I knew I needed it after he wrote an AMAZING Firefly novel earlier this year (review here) and I had decided then that I needed to read some of his Sherlock Holmes work and this seemed the perfect opportunity, not to mention that the cover for this book is the most beautiful thing in existence. Not to mention it’s actually a really good read so far!

What did you recently finish reading?

A few days ago I finished Star Wars: Resistance Reborn by Rebecca Roanhorse and although it didn’t quite grab me the way Phasma did (I’m seriously never getting over that book) it was really good, I enjoyed seeing what happens during some of the time between The Last Jedi and Rise of Skywalker as well as seeing some older faces that have been in the books, the comics and the older films.

What do you think you’ll read next?

Ahh, I won’t go into too much detail as my December TBR is going live tomorrow but I think it’ll probably be Starsight by Brendon Sanderson. I am trying to work my way through my ARCS and advance copies but trying to keep a balance between books that are coming out next year and new ones that are out now so that I can get some content written in advance but without running out of my weekly reviews too.

Have you read any of these? What are you reading right now? What have you read recently? I want to hear all about your reading life right now!

Considering I’m still on target with NaNoWriMo I’m quite pleased I’ve actually managed to get a fair bit of reading in this past fortnight! It’s certainly been helped that I’ve been reading some brilliant books I’m sure!

If you want to join in with WWW don’t forget to send over a big thank you to Sam at Taking on a World of Words for keeping WWW alive and kicking.

What are you currently reading?

My copy of Queen of Nothing by Holly Black arrived a few days early but I’m proud to say I managed to finish the book I have been currently reading at the time and managed to wait until my friend got their copy so we can buddy read before starting it but I’m reading it now and OMG. I didn’t realise how much I missed this series of books! I somehow forgot just how much I adore Jude and realised that she may actually be one of my all-time favourite characters. I also forgot just how much I loved the court intrigues and the push for power etc as well as the (I’m well aware) messed up relationship between Jude and Cardan. This whole book (so far) has felt like returning home and reading something written just for me.

What did you recently finish reading?

I recently finished CTRL – S by Andy Briggs and although I wasn’t sure what to expect and didn’t think it had the greatest start for me personally I found it wholly addictive and picked it up to read every moment I could (review coming very soon). The day I finished CTRL – S my Kickstarter copy of NPC Tea: Issue Seven by Sarah Milman came in and I feverishly devoured that in one sitting, it went so fast! Too fast! So much was explained and so much happened and I was distraught when I read the end and realised the next issue would be the last! It was left on a massive cliffhanger and I fear the wait for the next issue in February might kill me, I’m hoping all the Star Wars goodness to come in the next couple of months will help keep me distracted.

What do you think you’ll read next?

My first instinct was to say Star Wars: Resistance Reborn by Rebecca Roanhorse and I do really want to read this next but I’ve got time as The Rise of Skywalker isn’t out until mid-December so I figured it would actually probably be best to read  The Sky Weaver by Kristen Ciccarelli first instead. I loved the first two Iskari books and I don’t want to risk ruining it while trying to read it while being full-on into my yearly Star Was hype fest/obsession.

I’m so blessed to have been able to read and get hold of SO many great books that are all coming out right now and I’m so excited to read them all! What are you excited to read right now? Are there any new releases you’re excited to get your hands on or already have?

It’s been a fortnight already which is crazy, I felt like my last one of these posts was only a few days ago! It must be NaNoWriMo brain (check out my latest NaNo post here to see how I’m getting on). Still, I’m here and I’ve at least done SOME reading in between frantically writing so here’s my fortnightly check-in! Its scarily very similar to last fortnights check-in  but shhh.

If you want to join in with WWW don’t forget to send over a big thank you to Sam at Taking on a World of Words for keeping WWW alive and kicking.

What are you currently reading?

I’m working my way through Chasing the Shadows by Maria V. Snyder again at the moment! Still so grateful to have been given the chance to read this early and I’m really enjoying it so far!! It’s been really hard to put down. I know I was reading this for my last post a fortnight ago but I had some problems with my phone (where I’ve been reading it) charging really slowly so opted to read a paperback until I could get it fixed. Good news is the problem is sorted and I’m flying through this now!

What did you recently finish reading?

Unexpectedly, I ended up reading A Court of Frost and Starlight by Sarah J Maas which hadn’t been planned at all but after watching the latest teaser trailer from the lovely folks at The Starfall Court (check it out here) I was desperate to delve into that world again and this short novella of sorts was absolutely perfect and just what I needed. You can check out my review that went live on Tuesday here.

What do you think you’ll read next?

With any luck this time I’ll actually read CTRL S by Andy Briggs next. It arrived a little later than I thought it would so I wasn’t able to start it but it’s absolutely next on my list although my review might not be up for a little while yet as I’m taking part in a blog tour a little later on so keep your eyes peeled!

If you’re interested in what else I plan to read this month then never fear as tomorrow is the first Thursday of the month and therefore time for my monthly TBR Thursday post which is looking a little thin for a change but hopefully all the more manageable for it!

I’m finally starting to make my way through Angel Mage by Garth Nix and really enjoying it already. I’m not a huge amount of the way through but the group is pretty much all accounted for now and things are starting to come together. The world is really interesting and I can’t wait to read more.

What did you recently finish reading?

I’ve just finished the gorgeous Finding Home Graphic Novels by Hari Conner, I adore Janek and Chepi. I’d been meaning to read them for ages and they’ve been a nice break, I started reading a few pages or so of Vol. 1 each evening and then I ended up reading most of Vol. 2 in one sitting. I’ll go into more detail in a couple of weeks when my review of them both go live.

What do you think you’ll read next?

Definitely Hex Life: Wicked new tales of witchery edited by Christoper Golden and Rachel Autumn Deering. October is here and I’m feeling spooky and this book is an absolutely perfect read on the run-up to Halloween for sure. Not to mention I kind of want to get in the witchy spirit ready for the second book Discovery of Witches book I’m planning to get back to in audio format this month too.

What have you been reading this past fortnight? Have you read any of these already? If so what did you think? What are you planning to read next?

WWW Wednesday – September 25th 2019

www wednesday

My reading has been stagnant for a few weeks now while I’ve been reading Darkdawn but I’ve finally finished it now and so I can move on! I was excited to get a lot more reading done but it turns out I’ve got a horrid cold my husband brought home last week and so I’ve just been moping around feeling sorry for myself while occasionally playing animal crossing to cheer me up in between looking after Nate who has also caught it! I’m still making progress though and so I invite you to check out my fortnightly WWW Wednesday post and hear about what I’ve been reading and what I plan to read next.

What are you currently reading?

I’m currently reading The Deathless Girls by Kiran Milgrave Harwood. I’m only about 20% of the way through at the moment and I’ve enjoyed the writing style but nothing hugely interesting has happened yet although there have been little hints here and there of what’s to come possibly. In case you haven’t heard of The Deathless Girls before it’s a tagged as a feminist retelling of the story of the Bridges of Dracula.

What did you recently finish reading?

Obviously Darkdawn but since then I’ve also finished NPC Tea – Vol Six by Sarah Milman (Issues one – six available here). “NPC Tea is about Cardiff’s least popular tea shop, Y Ddraig, run by a perfectionist elf and a disgruntled fire summon. When a magicless human discovers Y Ddraig’s secret and a type of banned magic rears its ugly head, caddies upon caddies of rotting tea become the least of their worries as the entire city of Cardiff is threatened with destruction!” I think volume six may have been my absolute favourite issue so far! There were some lovely sweet moments, much blushing and a nice healthy dose of danger too! Things are really hotting up with the penultimate issue seven out imminently, ahh I don’t want it to end!

What do you think you’ll read next?

Unless NPC Volume seven turns up before I finish The Deathless Girls then it’ll almost certainly be Angel Mage by Garth Nix. I’m really excited to read this new dive into adult fantasy AND it’s a standalone novel which I’m so here for right now. I’ve seen some describe the book as a cross of The Three Muskateers and Joan of Arc which sounds very much up my streets (I was obsessed with The Man in the Iron Mask and The Messenger: Joan of Arc when I was a teenager) so I can’t wait to get stuck in, plus I’m taking part in the blog tour towards the end of the month!

Have you read any of the books featured today? What are you reading at the moment? What have you read recently? Let me know and I’ll reply from my sickbed as much as I can. Keep an eye out for a new book tag coming tomorrow!

WWW Wednesday September 11th 2019

Another fortnight has come and gone and I’m underprepared as usual (7am on a Wednesday morning instead of 8am is an improvement though neh? (Gone are those days too as now little man is at school 8am is a much more frantic time and leaves no room for panicked blogging! On the bright side, WWW Wednesday is a fun, easy post as I just talk about what I’ve read and what I want to read next and is probably one of my favourites.

If you want to join in with WWW don’t forget to send over a big thank you to Sam at Taking on a World of Words for keeping WWW alive and kicking.

What are you currently reading?

As I’m sure you’re sick of hearing about now, I’m currently reading Darkdawn by Jay Kristoff (still). I’m making pretty slow going with it, not because I’m not enjoying it as it definitely as the least draggy start of all three books but I’m just so short on time to read at the moment and I defintley don’t want to rush this one, I feel like it needs to be savoured.

What did you recently finish reading?

I actually managed to squeeze in The Tea Dragon Festival by Katie O’Neill and, much like it’s predecessor, it’s an absolute work of art.  I think it may actually be my favourite of the two! It comes out next week and my spoiler-free review will go live on the same day. Prepare for more tea dragon cuteness!

What do you think you’ll read next?

Probably The Deathless Girls by Kiran Millwood Hargrave. I’m on a big vampire kick at the moment and have honestly just been rewatching Moonlight (slightly angsty vampire TV show from the 00’s and one of my favourites) in between battling the urge to read fanfic for the past week so I think some a fresh vampire story can only be a good thing, I’m so glad they seem to be “back in” for YA now!

What are you reading at the moment? Is anyone else still currently reading Darkdawn or is it just me now? Have you read The Deathless Girls? If so let me know what you thought! Feel free to link me to any spoiler-free reviews about it as I’d love to check them out. Have a great Wednesday!
