tag Thursday

I came across this tag from the lovely Gaynor at Paperbacks and Pinot and I loved learning a bit more about her as a blogger and decided to give it a go myself too! You can check out her post here.

How Long Have You Been A Blogger?

I originally started a booktube channel back in Nov 2016. I would film and edit videos when my little boy napped and went to bed etc but as time went on and he got older, he didn’t really nap much and I found I just had too much to do without sitting down to make myself look presentable, talk to a camera for half an hour or so then spend three hours editing it. I posted two reviews on my brand spanking new blog back in October two years ago before promptly giving up and going back to YouTube. Later in mid-February 2018 I came back and other than one week, I have posted at least once a week (usually more) since then.

What is the best part?

It probably sounds cliche because I imagine a lot of people have already said it but the community is by far my favourite part. There’s always someone lovely to talk to at events and there are so many other bloggers, authors and people who enjoy books that I chat to via Instagram and/or Twitter on a regular basis and that I would consider friends and I know it wouldn’t have been possible without having stepped into blogging. I love how supportive 90% of the community is and it absolutely helps me with motivation, not just when it comes to blogging and making time for reading but also just with my life in general.

What is the worst part?

Like any community really there can really be some pettiness and arguments although thankfully I’ve managed to steer clear of most of them. I think the worst part for me is possibly feeling bad when I can’t afford to go to all of these amazing events or always having the most recent books. I’m fairly lucky and I get more books than I can review at the moment which I’m so grateful for because there are a lot of great books I would have missed out on if not for publishers sending me review copies.

How long does it take you to find/create pictures to use?

It depends really, I’m not someone who spends hours taking photos because it’s just not feasible with my four year old around. I’m also finding that you really need a dedicated props collection and amazing lighting to make the shots how you want them a lot of the time. I usually have neither of these things and often, when I can I like to take photos outside but I don’t get many opportunities nowadays so I’ve found myself reusing older pictures for blog posts or not really including any at all. My Instagram is on a bookish photo break at the moment for Inktober but I know I really need to start sorting out and stockpiling photos now so that I have some for November when I should be busy with NaNoWriMo.

Who’s your book crush?

I think Jace from City of Bones was probably my very first book crush and one that has kind of stayed with me, to be honest. I do have a thing for Lucien from ACOTAR but not sure if that’s because I want to kiss him or be him (see Lucien styled D&D character that I play every week). I defintley have a newfound crush on Mia from Nevernight too as well as being half in love with Tric as well.

What author would you like to have on your blog?

I think I peaked when I got to interview Lauren James as she’s one of my absolute favourite authors and when I was offered the opportunity it was probably one of my highest blogger moments and I have never worked so hard on a set of questions in my entire life. I think the only way I could top it would be someone like Jay Kristoff or Holly Black.

What do you wear when you write your blog?

Haha what a strange question! Honestly, it’s usually PJs as I tend to write in the morning before breakfast (which I’m doing right now) or in the evening quite often I’m wearing PJ bottoms and whatever top I’ve been wearing that day. I love me some comfy PJ bottoms!

How long does it take you to prepare a post?

It really varies, to be honest, sometimes I can get one done in an hour or so but often it can take a fair bit more depending on the kind of post, if it’s a “think piece” so to speak it’s usually quicker because I just type type type and then edit after and most of the time is taken doing research, book tags can take longer as I often spend time thinking of particular books for answers and reviews or interview posts take the longest as they involve a lot of prep work and I have to really be in the right frame of mind to concentrate properly.

How do you feel about the book blogger community/culture?

Mostly positive as I’ve covered above really. Like a lot of fandoms it has it’s problems especially because it’s so broard, even in just the YA side of things becasue that includes so many different tastes and points of view that can sometimes clash quite horribly.

What do you think one should do to have a successful blog?

For me personally, it’s enjoyment. If you’re enjoying writing and working on you’re blog then you’re sucsessful because you’re doing something you enjoy and that’s brilliant. Don’t get me wrong it’s lovely to have a nice follower and view count (I’m still reeeling from hitting 500 followers! I love you all) but not everyone measures sucsess that way and I actually only look at views now when I’m applying for an early review copy or similar whereas I used to look at my stats multiple times a day and I really do feel better for not obsessing about it.
Thank you for much for checking out my go at this tag, I hope you enjoyed it! I won’t tag any one else specifically but if you want to have a go consider yourself tagged right now!

The 100 Truths Tag

So I’ve been a little out of touch with my blogging lately, little man starting school has really thrown me out of the loop with a lot of things and my blogging and reading is something that’s taken a bit of a hit. I’ve gone from having scheduled posts or at least ideas/rough ideas for posts weeks in advance to sneaking in a bit of blogging and reading in the small moments I can get and I’m sure it’ll balance out eventually, it just might take some time. Today I decided to do a tag that’s been sitting in my drafts since about last year but I hadn’t got around to doing which is the 100 truths tag about myself.
